Easy Hummus

There are times when I fall out of the habit of making hummus. With five, sometimes six, kids in the house, sometimes I just succumb to grabbing a container at the grocery. But then I start making it again, and think to myself, why did I ever stop? Making hummus at home can save lots of money and help eliminate plastic waste. Freshly made hummus also tastes way better than what you can find at the store.

  • 1 Cup of Dried Chickpeas (Or 4 cans of canned chickpeas)

  • 1/3 Cup of Tahini

  • 4-5 Tsp of Minced Garlic

  • 1 Tsp Salt

  • 2 Lemons Juiced or 5-6 TBSP of Lemon Juice

  • 1/2 Tsp Cumin

  • 1/4 Tsp Cayenne Pepper

  • 1/4 Cup Ice Water

  • 1/4 Cup Olive Oil

Step 1

If using dried chickpeas (if not, move to step 2), soak chickpeas covered with several inches of water in a large pot overnight. Drain and rinse the next morning. Add beans back to the pot, covering with several inches of water, and bring to a boil. Reduce to a boil, and simmer for 3-4 hours or until chickpeas are tender. Save 1/2 cup of water, and drain and rinse.

Step 2

If using canned chickpeas, drain liquid from all but one can of chickpeas. Add all cans (3 drained, 1 chickpeas & liquid) to a food processor. For those who used dried chickpeas, add cooked chickpeas with 1/2 cup of reserved cooking liquid to a food processor. From here out, instructions will be the same. Add tahini, salt, garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and cayenne pepper to the chickpeas. Begin processing and slowly pour in 1/4 cup of ice water, holding back the ice.

Step 3

Allow the food processor to run for 1-2 minutes, smooth hummus tastes way better. Once hummus is completely pureed, slowly drizzle in olive oil, with the processor running. Turn off. At this point, I like to taste the hummus. Everyone’s taste buds vary, you may want to add more salt, lemon, garlic, etc. Make any tweaks you want to make now. Then put it in a container in the fridge. Hummus will thicken in the fridge.

Step 4

If you are serving hummus for dinner or for guests, place hummus in a shallow bowl or dish. Then top with some diced vegetables, olive oil, garlic, seasonings, etc. In the summer, I love doing fresh tomatoes and cucumbers from the garden with some zatar seasoning. You could also do olive oil and some minced garlic or toasted chickpeas. Really the possibilities are endless!
